KultureCity signage in the Honolulu Zoo
WAIKĪKĪ – The Honolulu Zoo, in partnership with the Honolulu Zoo Society and concessionaire SSA Group, has earned KultureCity’s Sensory Inclusive certification. This prestigious designation makes the Honolulu Zoo one of only two venues in Hawaiʻi equipped to accommodate individuals with sensory processing needs and invisible disabilities, reaffirming the zoo’s commitment to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all visitors.
The certification process included comprehensive training for zoo staff led by KultureCity’s experts, which featured psychologists and individuals with lived experience. Staff members were equipped with practical strategies to support guests with autism, post-traumatic stress disorder, dementia, ADHD, traumatic brain injuries, and other conditions.
As part of this initiative, sensory bags containing noise-canceling headphones, fidget tools, and other resources will be available for guests to borrow. Additionally, the zoo has established designated quiet areas and enhanced signage to assist sensory-sensitive visitors.
“Achieving KultureCity’s Sensory Inclusive certification helps the Honolulu Zoo provide meaningful experiences to all guests,” said Mary Benson, Executive Director of the Honolulu Zoo Society. “We are dedicated to ensuring the zoo is a welcoming and enjoyable place for everyone, including those with sensory needs.”
The Honolulu Zoo now joins a growing number of venues nationwide that are prioritizing inclusivity and accessibility. The zoo will continue to provide resources and training to support visitors of all abilities. Guests requiring sensory assistance can inquire at the front entrance or gift shop for support.
