The Honolulu Zoo has earned certification to support guests with sensory processing needs and invisible disabilities.

In order to earn nonprofit KultureCity’s Sensory Inclusive certification, the zoo underwent comprehensive training for staff, which featured psychologists and individuals with lived experience. KultureCity’s experts provided zoo staff with practical strategies to support guests with autism, post-traumatic stress disorder, dementia, ADHD, traumatic brain injuries, and other conditions.

As part of the process, the zoo now has sensory bags containing noise-canceling headphones, fidget tools, and other resources for guests to borrow. Also, the zoo established designated quiet areas and installed signs to assist sensory-sensitive visitors.

“Achieving KultureCity’s Sensory Inclusive certification helps the Honolulu Zoo provide meaningful experiences to all guests,” said Mary Benson, Executive Director of the Honolulu Zoo Society in a news release. “We are dedicated to ensuring the zoo is a welcoming and enjoyable place for everyone, including those with sensory needs.”

The zoo encourages guests requiring sensory assistance to inquire at the front entrance or gift shop for support.
