KultureCity's Fundraisers
For Finish Lines and Field Trips
Amount Raised:
$570.00 of $700
On October 12th, 2020 my son was diagnosed with autism. Although it was difficult news, so much of his behaviors and anxieties began to make sense—he had struggled in crowds and in noisy areas for as long as we could remember. I’d been an avid runner before he was born but when he’d come to watch me race, finish lines were usually uncomfortable.
Since that day in October we’ve learned a lot about how to best help my son in social situations and we’ve put to practice all that KultureCity has to offer. We’ve visited zoos and museums and grab sensory bags and have taken breaks in quiet zones. As a mom, I am keenly aware of situations that might not be sensory friendly and safe and those instances create stress for me. When my child goes on a field trip, I typically go along and have helped him leave spaces his class is in simply because he’s overwhelmed. I know in those moments that I’m blessed to be there for him but understand the anxiety that parents and loved ones feel when they can’t go along. I know that for every child in sensory crisis there are overworked teachers and staff trying to help. I also believe in inclusion and know that when a finish or a trip is KultureCity certified that there are tools and trained staff available to help mitigate overload and make the experience better for everyone.
With high hopes for reasonably accommodating finish lines and field trips, I am running for KultureCity.
